In 2009, legendary Italian freediver Enzo Maiorca was diving near the coast of Syracuse with his daughter Rossana when something extraordinary happened.
As Enzo descended into the blue, he suddenly felt a gentle tap on his back. Turning around, he saw a dolphin—its movements urgent, its eyes fixed on him. It wasn’t playing. It was asking for help.
The dolphin swam downward, and Enzo followed. About 15 meters below the surface, they found another dolphin tangled in an old fishing net. Wasting no time, Enzo called to Rossana for a knife and carefully cut through the strands until the animal was free.
The moment it broke loose, the dolphin emitted a sound Enzo later described as “almost like a human cry.” When they all surfaced, the divers realized the rescued dolphin was pregnant—and moments later, right there in the open sea, she gave birth.
The male dolphin circled the group protectively before approaching Enzo. It gently pressed its nose against his cheek, a soft, silent gesture of gratitude, before swimming away with his new family.
Later, Enzo reflected:
“Until people learn to respect and communicate with the natural world, they’ll never truly understand their place on this planet.”
It’s a powerful reminder that nature does speak—just not always in words.
